In this day of high technology, we need to touch and use things that have been made by other humans. The connection with the maker is something that is missing in factory produced wares. I gear my pottery to satisfy the needs of kitchen and table, restricting myself to producing a limited range of forms that are continually refined. Some refinements come from observations made in daily use of my pottery in my own home. Others come from working repeatedly with similar forms over the years. As a functionalist in the tradition of Bernard Lerach, I view the making of pottery that flows from my soul the ultimate achievement.
Each activity that I take part in is of no more or less value to me than one breath is more lifegiving than another. Although my exhibitions, lectures, and workshops keep me away from the studio, they are valuable in my development as an artist. My expectations for my work and myself are continually elevated. I'm my own worst critic.
