About Us

Ketchum/Sun Valley~~ Taylormade Pottery is the shop, city studio and home of internationally known potters Elmer and Dianne Taylor.

The Taylors have been associated with Sun Valley since 1986, when Elmer came to conduct a workshop for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.  They fell in love with the community and purchased a small cabin in the city core.  The former living room is now their shop/gallery and a building in the rear is their city studio.  They  purchased land in a remote area of Idaho, between the cities of Challis and Mackay with a dear friend, Mark Fisher, who later died.  They ended up with the whole 100 acres, which they named Fishtayl ranch, in honor of Mark.  (Fisher~Taylor--get it?)  In 2009 they began work on a large studio on the ranch.  See
the "Fishtayl Ranch" page for more information.

Until 2002, they were able to spend only the summers in Idaho.  Then Dianne retired from teaching at the University of North Texas to move here full time.
Elmer joins her each summer.

Their work has been featured in more than 300 exhibitions in locations ranging from Sun Valley to Geneva, Switzerland.  They have been the subject of  featured articles and/or contributors to such publications as Ceramics Monthly and Fiberarts Magazine.

Both pride themselves on creating work that is both functional and affordable, with most pieces priced under $50.  While they have distinctively different styles, both use colorful palettes, a contrast with pottery's traditional earth tones.

In addition to traditional objects such as tableware and vases, the Taylors enjoy the challenge of fulfilling custom requests such as wedding platters, ranch ware, pet paw prints, and custom dinnerware.  The gallery also features pots by other artists known for their functional wares.  They also carry Paolo Soleri's distinctive bronze bells, created to fund the Frank Lloyd Wright disciple's visionary community of Arcosanti in the Arizona desert.

Hours at the gallery on 760 Washington Ave. N. in Ketchum, Idaho vary with the seasons.  It is usually open from 10 am to 6 pm every day except Wednesday,
but during the summer, the Taylors close a couple of days every week to work on their country studio at Fishtayl Ranch.  If normal hours are not convenient for visitors, the shop is opened at other times.  "We live here, so it's easy to open the shop at other times," says Dianne.
